This is the title of the talk, illustrated with songs of the time, on the history of the PRESS GANG in the North East of England. The talk is an opportunity to hear about the history of the forced enlistment into the navy. This mainly focuses on the 18th and 19th Centuries and the role of the notorious Press Gang. The talk is illustrated with performances of, and reference to, songs which give an insight into a bygone age.
We thoroughly enjoyed your wonderful presentation. The songs were excellent - and such fun to join in!
Pam and Chris Jolly, Morpeth
All of the songs had catchy choruses: audience participation was encouraged by the performers and enthusiastically delivered to make for an enjoyable occasion.
Richard Appleby, Chair of Events Committee, Northumberland and Newcastle Society.

This is a presentation about the HISTORY OF RECRUITMENT INTO THE “RED COAT” ARMY with special reference to the North East of England. The presentation is in the form of a series of songs and slides. These, together with a talk which explains the relevance of the songs, help to give an understanding of the history of enlistment into the army. It mainly focusses on the 18th and 19th Centuries and highlights the role of the Recruiting Sergeant.

Old English have organised concerts and performed in concerts for many years. The programmes consist of traditional songs, many of which have choruses and audience participation is always encouraged.
This is a development in that the programme of music is themed so that all the material comes from the North East, but again there is an emphasis on songs with choruses with which the audience can join in. The use of the Northumberland Small Pipes as both a solo instrument and as an accompanying instrument adds to the flavour of the performances.
As volunteers, Old English visit many local care homes and give concerts for the residents. Some of these are organised privately, between the care home and Old English. Anyone who is interested can enquire through the CONTACT US page. They also work for Mind Active which is a local charity based in Bedlington. Mind Active supports local volunteers to improve the lives of older people living in residential care homes. As volunteers. Old English visit many homes in venues which are organised by the Mind Active staff.
